Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Uganda

Ziwa is a ranch, not a national park, and it is the only place in Uganda to track southern white rhinos on foot. You walk with rangers. The animals are monitored. It is not a wild crash of rhinos on an open plain — it is still the rhino encounter Uganda can legally sell.

Almost every Murchison safari we write stops here between Entebbe and the Falls. The visit takes a couple of hours. Doing Ziwa as a stand-alone day from Kampala is possible; it is rarely the best use of a scarce safari day.

Wildlife

Southern white rhinos — Uganda’s only on-foot rhino tracking.

What we book here

  • Rhino tracking on foot
  • Birding on the ranch
  • Usually a stop between Entebbe and Murchison Falls

Where we put you

No overnight required. Continue to Murchison the same afternoon, or return to Kampala if this is a day trip.

Getting there

On the Kampala–Gulu highway, about three and a half hours from Entebbe. We time it as a late-morning stop.

How we combine it

Murchison Falls. That is the product.

Best time

Tracking is scheduled daily. Book it into a Murchison itinerary rather than as a stand-alone trip unless you are short on time.
