Mount Elgon National Park
Uganda
Mount Elgon is a shared volcano with Kenya, more trekking mountain than wildlife park. The caldera, caves, and the Sipi Falls on the Ugandan farmed slopes are the reasons to come. Duiker and highland birds exist; lions do not.
Most Afrisites guests do Sipi: three waterfalls, coffee on small farms, optional abseil for those who want it. Multi-day caldera treks are a different product — tents, porters, weather. We do not mix the two in one brochure sentence.
Elgon pairs with Pian Upe or as a break on a north-east circuit. It is not on the Bwindi road. If your week is gorillas and Kazinga, skip it.
Wildlife
Forest primates, duiker, and highland birds. The draw is the caldera, caves, waterfalls and Sipi Falls on the farmed slopes.
What we book here
- Sipi Falls day hikes
- Caldera trekking
- Cave walks
- Coffee tours on the mountain’s lower farms
Where we put you
Sipi River Lodge and the simpler Sipi guesthouses. Caldera treks use park camps.
Getting there
Five to six hours from Kampala via Mbale. Combine with Pian Upe without returning to the capital.
How we combine it
Pian Upe, a Mbale coffee night, or a Kenya border story we do not sell as a safari.
Best time
December–March and June–August are the usual trekking windows. Rain makes the high trails serious.
