Lake Bunyonyi
Uganda
Lake Bunyonyi is a crater lake near Kabale, used as the exhale after Bwindi. Islands, dugout canoes, terraced hills. It is not a wildlife destination. Otters and wetland birds exist; you are here to sleep and look at water.
We put a night here when the gorilla trek was steep, when Nkuringo was the sector, or when the guest has asked for a rest day that is not another game-drive. Canoeing is the activity. Zip-lines and party hostels are not our brief.
Wildlife
A rest lake, not a big-game park. Otters, wetland birds, and island villages.
What we book here
- Canoeing
- Island lodge stays
- Recovery night after Bwindi or Mgahinga gorilla trekking
Where we put you
Birdnest, Arcadia, and quieter island camps. We avoid the noisiest backpacker strip unless you ask for it.
Getting there
An hour or so from Nkuringo or Rushaga. From Buhoma it is longer. From Kampala it is not a first-night stop.
How we combine it
Bwindi or Mgahinga. That is the whole point.
Best time
Year-round. Mornings are often clear; afternoons can cloud over in the hills.
