Lake Mburo National Park
Uganda
Lake Mburo is the savannah you can reach from Kampala in time for a late lunch. Zebra, eland, impala, hippo and a strong wetland bird list. There are no lions, which is why walking safaris are allowed — a different morning from a Queen Elizabeth game-drive.
The park is a cluster of lakes and acacia woodland on the Masaka–Mbarara road, which is also the road to Bwindi. That is why it appears as night one or night last on so many gorilla itineraries. A boat on the lakes is the quiet highlight; night drives are offered when the park rules allow.
Mburo is not a Big Five park. We do not sell it as one. It is the right first African game-drive for families, and the right last night if your gorilla trek finished at noon in Nkuringo.
Wildlife
Zebra, eland, impala, hippo, crocodile, and a strong bird list around the lakes. No lions, which makes walking safaris possible.
What we book here
- Game drives
- Walking safari
- Boat trip on the lakes
- Night drive where permitted
Where we put you
Mihingo Lodge, Rwakobo Rock, and Arcadia cottages. Walking distance of zebra valleys matters more than the star rating.
Getting there
Three and a half to four hours from Kampala/Entebbe. From Bwindi via Kabale it is an afternoon. From Queen Elizabeth it is a half day.
How we combine it
Bwindi gorilla trekking, Queen Elizabeth, or a stand-alone weekend from Kampala.
Best time
Year-round. Often a first or last night on a Uganda circuit because it sits on the Kampala–Bwindi road.
