Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s mountain gorilla park — Kinigi, the Virunga cones, and a permit system that sells out in peak months. The trek is the same idea as Bwindi (briefing, family, hike, one hour) on a different mountain, with different logistics and a higher permit price.
Musanze (Ruhengeri) is the town. Golden monkey tracking, the Bisoke crater hike, and the Dian Fossey / Karisoke trail are the second-day options if you do not want a second gorilla permit. Iby’Iwacu cultural visits are arranged with the community that receives the fee.
Kigali is close enough that some travellers trek as a long day trip. Afrisites prefers a night in Musanze: you start with the rangers, not with a 3 a.m. hotel alarm in the capital.
Combine with Akagera for savannah, Nyungwe for chimps, or Lake Kivu for a rest shore. Combine with Bwindi when you want both countries on one ticket — we run the Cyanika or Katuna crossing.
