Bwindi Impenetrable National Park holds a little over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The forest sits on the Albertine Rift, steep, wet and older than the savannah parks most people picture when they say “safari”. You do not game-drive here. You walk.

There are four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each has its own families, trail character and lodge cluster. Buhoma is the original, with a gentler approach for many groups. Ruhija sits higher. Rushaga and Nkuringo are where Uganda also sells the gorilla habituation experience — four hours with a semi-habituated family instead of the standard one-hour trek. Afrisites books the permit first, then matches the lodge to that sector. We do not sell a “Bwindi” night that is a two-hour transfer from the trailhead.

A trek day starts with a ranger briefing and the allocation of a family. Fitness matters more than age (the park minimum is usually 15). Porters are not a luxury; they are how you keep your hands free on wet roots. You have one hour with the gorillas. Flash is forbidden. Then you walk out, which can be as long as the walk in.

Bwindi is almost always combined with Queen Elizabeth (Ishasha is next door) or Kibale. Lake Bunyonyi is the usual rest night after a hard trek. Mgahinga, further south on the Virungas, is the other Uganda gorilla park — useful when Bwindi permits are sold out, not a substitute for a first-choice Buhoma family.

Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs, Rushaga Gorilla Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (Nkuringo) and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp are the names we actually quote. Budget rooms exist in Buhoma village; we say so if that is the brief.

Getting there

From Kampala/Entebbe the road is a full day. The comfortable alternative is a light-aircraft flight to Kihihi or Kisoro, then a short transfer. From Queen Elizabeth (Ishasha) it is a morning. From Rwanda (Musanze) it is a border crossing we handle on combined trips.

How we combine it

Ishasha tree-climbing lions, Kibale chimpanzees, Lake Bunyonyi, or a second gorilla morning in Mgahinga or Volcanoes National Park.

Best time

Permits are issued year-round. June–August and December–February are drier; April, May and November are quieter.
