Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda

Mgahinga is Uganda’s corner of the Virunga volcanoes — three cones, a slice of park, and the Nyakagezi gorilla family that sometimes sleeps on this side of the Rwanda/DRC line. When they are in Uganda you trek them from the Ntebeko gate. When they are not, we switch you to golden monkeys, the Batwa trail through Garama Cave, or a day hike toward Sabinyo.

This is not a second Bwindi. The forest is different, the views are alpine, and gorilla availability is not a daily guarantee. Afrisites is honest about that before you pay for a Kisoro night. Golden monkey tracking is the reliable primate morning.

Kisoro town is the base. Combined trips with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park make geographic sense: you are already on the massif. Combined trips with Bwindi make product sense when you want two gorilla countries or a backup permit strategy.

Wildlife

Mountain gorillas (when the Nyakagezi family is on the Uganda side), golden monkeys, and volcano landscapes of the Virungas.

What we book here

  • Gorilla trekking
  • Golden monkey tracking
  • Garama Cave and Batwa trail
  • Sabinyo or Muhabura day hikes

Where we put you

Mount Gahinga Lodge (the one people remember) and Kisoro hotels when the lodge is full. We do not invent a “volcano view” from a town courtyard.

Getting there

A long road day from Kampala, or a flight to Kisoro. From Musanze (Rwanda) it is a border process we run often. From Buhoma it is a full transfer around the forest.

How we combine it

Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi, golden monkeys, or a Rwanda gorilla morning the next day.

Best time

Gorilla permits depend on the family’s location. Golden monkey tracking is more reliably available.
