Kibale National Park is the most reliable chimpanzee tracking in East Africa — not because the forest is easy, but because the habituated communities are used to visitors and the success rate is high. Thirteen primate species live here. Chimps are the reason you come; red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey and grey-cheeked mangabey are what you notice on the walk in.

Standard tracking is a morning. Habituation walks last longer and cost more; you move with researchers rather than a tourist group on a clock. We book the activity that matches your fitness and your budget, and we do not pretend they are the same morning.

Fort Portal sits on the edge of the park, a crater-lake town that makes a civilised base. Bigodi wetland, just outside the gate, is a community walk that is often better for birds and colobus than the park interior. Crater-lake drives fill the afternoon when you do not want a second forest walk.

Kibale sits on the classic west-Uganda circuit: Murchison or Semuliki to the north, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi to the south. A chimpanzee morning plus a gorilla trek three days later is the product most first-time visitors actually want.

Where we put you

Primate Lodge Kibale (inside the forest), Crater Safari Lodge, and Ndali Lodge on a crater rim. We do not put chimpanzee trackers in Fort Portal town unless the brief is strictly budget.

Getting there

Five to six hours’ drive from Kampala via Fort Portal, or a hop after a Murchison game-drive. From Queen Elizabeth it is a half day through the equatorial crater lakes.

How we combine it

Queen Elizabeth (Kazinga boat), Bwindi gorillas, Semuliki hot springs, or a Toro crater-lake night without a second park fee.

Best time

Tracking runs daily. Drier months are easier on the trails; chimps are active all year.
